Chevy 88-98 OBS Builder 3 Piece Crossmember
Description
The WFO GM '88-'98 OBS Builder 3 piece Cross-member kit is a great start to your Solid Axle Swap! Our customer's have been asking us to design this cross-member for years. We have used this design in the shop on many 1500, 2500, and 3500 Trucks, Tahoes, Yukons and Suburbans. Due to the vairety of OBS builds with diffferent transmissions and transfer cases combos, we never really offered this to our customers. We have found that if we leave the transmission mount loose and the cross-member in raw metal, it will give the home builder a bigger chance of success. If you have a stock drivetrain, the transmission mount lines right up and welds in place. If you have a custom transmission or transfer case setup, such as a doubler, Atlas, or 205, the cross-member can be moved forward or back on the frame rails by simply drilling new holes in your frame. Then the transmission mount can be modified to fit, before it is welded on.
This cross-member has one suspension link mount on each side. The mounting tabs are 2 5/8" wide, and use a 5/8" bolt. You can also drill the tabs out to 3/4" if needed. We commonly use 1.25" Chromoly heim joints or Rod ends in these link pockets. We have also used our softer riding Duroflex Joints, Poly bushings, or rebuildable Johnny Joints in these.
If you are planning to do an OBS build, please call one of our sales guys to walk you though the design and build of the other supporting components you can purchase from us.
SPECS:
The link pockets are 2 5/8" wide with 5/8" holes
Mig welded and constructed from 1/4" P&O steel plate
The transmission mount is NOT welded to the center section. Depending on what transmission you are running, you may need to modify the height or bolt pattern before welding it on.
"OBS" stands for "Old Body Style" this refers to 1988-1998 GM vehicles.
Kit Includes:
- 3 piece bolt-in cross-member with link mounts, welded, in raw metal form
- raised transmission mount, welded together, but not welded to cross-member yet
- Grade 8 Hardware to bolt cross-member together, and to bolt cross-member to frame. (not shown in picture)
MADE IN THE USA!
Warning: When starting a SAS build on a Tahoe, Yukon, or some 1500 trucks, be sure you do not have an AutoTrac full time transfer case. This means that the front driveline spins at all times. This will cause a front driveshaft vibration at highway speeds that will never go away. Even if you are in 2wd and have the front hubs unlocked!
